Since this year will likely be another very small Big Bang, I've been trying to think of another possible story to write. Since my first BB this year is a Tony/Hotch NCIS/Criminal Minds crossover, I did want to write something that was not a crossover.
I got an idea on Saturday and write it on Sunday. It's only about 5400 words, but that's enough to qualify as a Micro-Bang. That gives me one Big Bang and one Micro Bang story.
I originally estimated 3-5 stories this year. So far, I now have two done (unless I change my mind about submitting the second one), one writer says they have a Mini-Bang done, and is more than halfway through a second story, but that's also likely to be a Mini-Bang from the sounds of it. Another writer said they haven't worked on their story lately, but they're determined to have it ready by the rough draft due date (about 2-1/2 weeks).
So at this point, we have three finished and two still in the works. And there's also a very slim chance of another story or two popping up. I did have a couple of authors say they would sign up IF they got a story done. One has let me know she doesn't have anything, but I haven't heard from the other one.
That does give me concern about the claims. Last year, we had two summaries, and four artists signed up. None of the artists were very interested in either of the summaries. Basically, two artists had no interest in either of them. One artist said they'd do either one, and another artist would do one, but not the other. And the two artists who made claims were both very willing to step back if anyone else wanted them.
This year, so far, there are only two artists signed up. I'm concerned that they won't be all that interested in the summaries. It's not that the summaries are bad, but I think you really need a few artists with different tastes to get a good mix in there. I'd like people to be excited by the summaries, and really want to create something.
Last year, we did have one artist who signed up late, but they didn't claim anything. Which is odd. It seems like if you sign up late, it's because something sparked your interest. Maybe they changed their mind. I'm still hoping we'll get another artist or two, but I'm not holding my breath. I have heard from two former artist participants who said they're not going to sign up, but if I have unclaimed summaries to let them know and they'd consider it. I didn't sign up myself, but would consider creating a banner as long as it wasn't a crossover I'm unfamiliar with - which would be most of them! I'd do Criminal Minds and maybe a couple of others.
The way I do drafts and claims, especially for such a small challenge, stories submitted by the rough draft due date are eligible for the claims. If anyone finishes later, about the next 30 days or so, they can post their story without artwork or can supply their own.
Beyond those three authors, there's one who says they have an idea, but don't feel they'll have the time to write it. However, I wrote a story yesterday, so it is possible. Another writer, a new one to the challenge, has never checked in. Generally, that means we won't see a story from them. I don't expect to see a story from them. But, you never know.
Anyway:
08/03/2025 Sunday:
5400 words
I may still flesh it out a bit. I doubt it'll get much over 6K, but you never know. It doesn't need to be fully completed and ready to post until 09/30.
